Russell/Moody House - Pepperell MA

This house, featured by Fine Homebuilding magazine in its 1994 special issue "Houses," utilizes innovative design to achieve its sustainable character. A masonry woodstove produces 50% of needed heat, supplemented by a passive solar sunspace that provides another 30%. Super insulation levels in the walls minimize heat loss. Aligned with the sunspace facing south, the house also benefits from the site’s microclimate, with deciduous trees providing shading and cooling in the summer. The bright 2,400 square feet interior accentuates open space, but provides for cozy areas with imaginative variations of material, scale and lighting. The exterior siding material is rot-resistant cedar with minimal paint, reducing long term maintenance.
